Common Questions

Health Insurance for Spanish Residency

Whether you are applying for a non-lucrative visa, digital nomad visa, or student visa, private health insurance is a mandatory requirement for obtaining Spanish residency.

Why You Need Health Insurance for a Spanish Residency Visa

Spain requires all non-EU applicants to hold private health insurance for Spanish residency that provides full medical coverage without copays. This applies to every visa category that leads to a residency card (TIE), including the non-lucrative visa, digital nomad visa, student visa, golden visa (ended April 2025), and retirement visa.

Your policy must be issued by a Spanish insurance company or one operating in Spain, cover you from day one of your stay, and meet the specific requirements set by Spanish consulates worldwide. Travel insurance or international plans are not accepted.

Health Insurance Requirements for Spanish Residency Card

  • No copays: Your policy must provide coverage without copayments or deductibles at the point of care
  • Full coverage: Must include hospitalization, surgery, outpatient care, and emergency treatment equivalent to the Spanish public system
  • Spanish provider: The insurer must be authorized to operate in Spain by the Directorate General of Insurance (DGSFP)
  • No age limits or waiting periods: Coverage must begin immediately and not exclude pre-existing conditions during the visa period
  • Repatriation not required: Unlike Schengen travel insurance, residency visa policies focus on local medical treatment rather than repatriation
